Carnelian is a red to brownish red color semi-precious gemstone made of mineral family Chalcedony. Sometimes, Carnelian is mistaken to be same as Sard Onyx (Red Onyx) however, they are different. The Sard onyx is more harder and slightly darker in color.

Specific Gravity: 2.59 to 2.61
Etymology: According to the Wikipedia, modern term, "carnelian" is an alteration to the 14th-century word "cornelian" which comes from the Mediaeval Latin corneolus, itself derived from the Latin word cornum, the cornel cherry, whose translucent red fruits resemble the stone.
Origin: Carnelians are mostly found in India, Brazil and Germany.
Who should wear Carnelian: Carnelian, because of its orangish red color, is considered to be the best substitute for the astrological birthstone - Red Coral. People born in Lagna Aries (Mesh) & Scorpio (Vrishchik) can wear a Carnelian for a lifetime. Apart from these, people with Lagna Cancer (Kark), Leo (Simha), Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meen) can also wear Carnelian gemstone.

When to wear: Best time to wear the Carnelian gemstone is during sunrise of a Tuesday which falls between Ashtami tithi of Shukla Paksha ( the 8th day the Waxing moon period) and Ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha (8th day of waning moon period).
How to wear (Best procedure to wear):
On the selected day & time to wear your Carnelian, take your ring or pendant studded with the Carnelian and place it in a clean and empty bowl.
Now, add Panchadravyas (Five Sacred Elements) in the following pattern one by one to the bowl – Starting with: GANGA JAL (Holy Water), TULSI LEAVES (Basil leaves), MILK, HONEY & GHEE (Butter). Mix them together in the bowl with your finger and keep the bowl in front of you.
Close your eyes and recite the Mantra "Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaaye Namah:" 108 times and pray to the Mangal Bhagwan (Lord Mars) to give you the strength, energy & prosperity.
Open your eyes and take the ring out of the bowl. Dip it in another bowl of clean water and soak it with a cotton cloth piece and wear it.
Note: Please do not throw the mixture of Panchadravya in the dump. Rather, pour it in a flowerpot or Plant pot as this mixture is considered a good fertilizer too.
